About Tata
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles is an Indian car maker in the Tata Group. It was established in 1945 as a locomotive manufacturer, and its headquarters is in Mumbai. Since October 1, 2025, a separate company, Tata Motors Ltd., holds the commercial vehicle business.12
The Indica launched in 1998 and was the first fully indigenous Indian passenger car. The Nano ran from 2008 to 2018 and was marketed as the least expensive production car in the world.1
Current petrol and diesel models include the Tiago from 2016 and the Nexon from 2017. Newer models are the Harrier from 2019, the Punch from 2021 and the Curvv from 2024. The electric models include the Nexon EV from 2019 and the Tiago.ev from 2022.1
Tata bought Jaguar Land Rover from Ford in 2008 for 2.3 billion dollars. As of 2025, Tata is the third-largest car maker in India by sales.1
