About AM General

AM General is an American maker of military and utility vehicles. American Motors Corporation established it in 1971 as a wholly owned subsidiary. The headquarters is in South Bend, Indiana, and the factory is in Mishawaka, Indiana.1

The company traces its roots to the Standard Wheel Company of Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1903, that company added the Overland Automotive Division.1

AM General makes the military HMMWV, known as the Humvee, and military trucks such as the M35 and M939 series. It also made the civilian Hummer H1 and H2. It built transit buses from 1974 to 1979.1

In 1983, AM General won a contract to build 55,000 Humvees. KPS Capital Partners bought the company in July 2020 from MacAndrews & Forbes.12
