About smart
Smart began in 1994 as a joint venture between Swatch and Mercedes-Benz. Nicolas Hayek of Swatch planned a small city car. The name comes from Swatch Mercedes Art. The Smart Fortwo made its debut at the Frankfurt auto show in 1997 and was in production by the middle of 1998.1
Since 2019, Smart has been a 50:50 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. smart Automobile Co., Ltd. was established in 2019. The main office is in Ningbo, China. The European operations company, smart Europe GmbH, is in Leinfelden-Echterdingen near Stuttgart, Germany.23
After the 2019 restructuring, the brand builds only battery electric vehicles. The current models are the #1, #3, #5 and #6. Smart left the United States market in 2019.23
