About Land Rover
Land Rover began production in Solihull, England, in 1948. The Rover Company made the first Land Rover. Its managing director, Spencer Wilks, and its technical director, Maurice Wilks, saw a Jeep on a farm and decided to build a British competitor. The first Land Rover appeared at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948.12
Farmers, adventurers and the British Army bought the early Land Rovers. Charles “Spen” King created the first Range Rover in 1970. It was a more comfortable and spacious version of the Land Rover, with a V-8 engine and coil-spring suspension.2
Production of the Defender in Solihull ended after 67 years. Land Rover built more than two million vehicles from the original Series through the Defender.1
