About Plymouth

Plymouth was a Chrysler brand. Walter Chrysler wanted a low-priced model to round out his offerings, and the brand began in 1928. DaimlerChrysler announced in November 1999 that it would phase out the brand at the end of the 2001 model year.1

Plymouth helped to define the muscle car in the late 1960s and early 1970s with the Road Runner and the Barracuda. In 1983, Plymouth introduced a space-efficient minivan.1

The logo showed the ship Mayflower. The name came from the Plymouth colony of the Pilgrims and from Plymouth Binder Twine, a product that every farmer knew.2

The best year of the brand was 1973, when it sold 766,000 cars. Dodge and later Chrysler got their own versions of Plymouth models. This made it hard for Plymouth to form a distinct identity.1

Plymouth cars built from model year 1996 onward have the on-board diagnostic (OBD) system that the EPA describes for 1996 and newer vehicles.3
