SAE J1979

DTC parameters

The SAE J1979 standard has 54 DTC parameters.

How to read a parameter card

Distance traveled since diagnostic trouble codes cleared CLR_DIST

Distance accumulated since DTCs were cleared (via an external test equipment or possibly, a battery disconnect). This parameter is not associated with any particular DTC. It is simply an indication for inspection/maintenance, of the last time an external test equipment was used to clear DTCs. If greater than 65,535 km have occurred, will remain at 65,535 km and not wrap to zero.

Pelican can show this parameter as the distance since trouble codes were cleared.

  1. The parameter's name and its ID in the OBDb. Confirmed shows when a response from a real car confirms the parameter.
  2. The clutch mark shows a Connectable, a parameter that Pelican surfaces in its interface.
  3. The service and PID/DID asked for, the control module it's sent to, and how often Pelican asks.
  4. The reply's bytes. The parameter's bytes are blue. Bytes for other parameters in the same reply are grayed out. Hover over a byte to see the parameter it represents.
  5. Where the parameter is in the response, and how Pelican converts the raw value into a value.
  6. A real reply, decoded. The raw value comes first, then the reading.
  7. Which model years have tested this parameter.

Engine run time since diagnostic trouble codes cleared CLR_TIME

Time accumulated since DTCs were cleared (via an external test equipment or possibly, a battery disconnect). This parameter is not associated with any particular DTC. It is simply an indication for inspection/maintenance, of the last time an external test equipment was used to clear DTCs. If greater than 65,535 km have occurred, will remain at 65,535 minutes and not wrap to zero.

Malfunction indicator lamp MIL

The MIL status is OFF during key-on, engine-off bulb check unless MIL has also been commanded ON for a detected malfunction. The status reflects whether there are confirmed DTC(s) stored that are illuminating the MIL. It should not reflect the status of the MIL, which could be on for a function check, flashing I/M readiness or flashing for misfire.

Pelican can show this parameter as the checkEngineLightOn.

Number of warm-ups since diagnostic trouble codes cleared WARM_UPS

Number of OBD warm-up cycles since all DTCs were cleared (via an external test equipment or possibly, a battery disconnect). A warm-up is defined in the OBD regulations to be sufficient vehicle operation such that coolant temperature rises by at least 22°C (40°F) from engine starting and reaches a minimum temperature of 70°C (160°F) (60°C (140°F) for diesels). This PID is not associated with any particular DTC. It is simply an indication for inspection/maintenance, of the last time an external test equipment was used to clear DTCs. If greater than 255 warm-ups have occurred, this parameter will remain at 255 and not wrap to zero.
