How it works

Pelican Navigation is built on top of OpenStreetMap, the world's largest open source map. Volunteers improve it continuously, and through Pelican you can improve it, too. Pelican rebuilds the planet's road network every day to ensure you have the most up-to-date maps possible.

A public beta

Pelican Navigation is a newly hatched routing engine with one important trade-off, no traffic data, yet. Routes assume free-flowing traffic at the posted speed limit, so arrival times run optimistic during rush hour and pessimistic if you've got a heavy foot.

Choose your engine

You can swap between Pelican Navigation or MapKit Navigation in Pelican's Settings at any time.

Pelican as your default navigation app

In countries that support it, you can set Pelican as your default navigation app. Every address you tap on your phone will then open in Pelican.

Compared to MapKit Navigation

You can switch between Pelican Navigation and MapKit Navigation at any time. Each has strengths, so choose the routing engine that best suits your needs.

It gets better when you Scout

Pelican Navigation improves with every Scout report. Spot a missing speed limit, a closed road, a hazard, or a route that just doesn't make sense? Tap the Scout button on the map, pick a category, and you're done in seconds.

Reports are reviewed and fixed in the map data, and you'll get a bulletin when your report leads to a fix. Every report makes the next drive better, not just for Pelican drivers but for everyone that uses OpenStreetMap.

The road ahead

Here's where the engine stands today and what's next.

  1. Turn-by-turn navigationWith alternative routes to choose from.
  2. Lane guidanceKnow your lane before complex interchanges.
  3. Speed limits along your routePosted limits matched to the road you're on.
  4. Offline maps Pelican+Download regions and navigate without a connection.
  5. Historical trafficTypical speeds by time of day, built from open datasets and traffic camera footage.
  6. Real-time trafficLive conditions folded into routing and arrival times.
  7. Closures that reroute youRoad and lane closures steering route computation itself.
  8. Temporary speed zonesRoadwork and variable limits layered over posted limits.
